The concept

A father in self-imposed exile to shield his family from the emotionally destructive intrusive thoughts he cannot escape. To picture Charlie’s mind in this moment of crisis and isolation, our artistic influences were Francis Bacon and René Magritte for their symbolism and psychological styles.

Francis Bacon:  His work often delves into the darker aspects of the human psyche.

The gritty mood was essential to us to capture that tortured mindset presented in the script.

René Magritte: explored the subconscious mind and challenged the viewer's perception of reality.

He developed a theory concerning a hidden poetic layer of reality, whereby every object we perceive had ‘an amazing new poetic secret’ – a resonance that could be discovered through intellectual and pictorial inquiry.

The process

The lounge:

The location was an abandoned RAF that was being used to host raves parties , so , the main challenge was how to erase the graffitis from the walls , without removing the old texture that we liked for the film. After the scenic painting was done, we hand drawn some phrases in red and black, in many fonts and sizes, symbolising his intrusive thoughts.

The sand:

We needed 8tn of sand and many spare hands to help us to fill the set with this giant wave of sand in this beautiful surrealist scene.

The bathroom:

The hall:

The beach:

For a realistic look, the sign was made in a metal plaque, oxidated, hand painted and then  distressed.
